Humanist Book Club

We are a non-fiction book club meeting the fourth Sunday of each month at our members' homes.  Come join us as we read and discuss a wide range of interesting and relevant books related to our Humanist ideas and viewpoint.

How God Changes Your Brain by Andrew Newberg and Mark Waldeman. While title is somewhat off-putting, this book is really about how holding on to a belief system can organically change your brain, making it difficult to accept or even see inconsistencies or alternative beliefs.

Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. How do we make decisions? Why, rationally,of course- or so we think. Humans actually have two mechanisms to use in making decisions, and both are used at various times. Unfortunately, sometimes our brains use the irrational one without realizing it and big mistakes can happen.

The Moeal Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values by Harris? Here is a book by an author we have read recently and really enjoyed. Harris takes on the widely held belief that science has nothing to do with ethics or human values, and shows how this moral relativism is actually false.

The End of Growth by Richard Heinberg. As the political campaigns go into high gear, and promises of "more growth" as the solution to all our problems get louder, we will be looking at an alternative idea of a sustainable future.
